OVERVIEW OF PROJECT
An arts project involving drawing and math. The students will create an enlargement of a section of a photo of their class.  They will use the smaller piece of the photo that has been pre cut and enlarge it on a blank white sheet using a grid system.  A brief overview of  ways math is used in the practical world everyday like animation will be shared for example. After students finish drawing their portion of the photo it will assembled by the students working as a team to find where their squares goes.

“BIG IDEAS”/ ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S)
See http://www.authenticeducation.org/ae_bigideas/article.lasso?artid=99
Students will learn how to make a drawing using a grid system and see how math is applied across disciplines everyday.  The students will problems solve to enlarge their photo and in order to get their lines correct with plotting points to help them.

STUDENT OUTCOME OBJECTIVES
1. Creating or Evaluating: They will learn how to create a composition made using a grid system.
2. Analyzing: The students will have to problem solve in a team to install the finished product.
3. Applying: Students will apply the math skills and apply to drawing.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Understanding how 2D shapes can be used to fill up a composition, how to move points on a graph in order to enlarge, how to make a ratio.

LESSON PREPARATION TIMELINE
4-5 HOURS; Procure and prepare materials, create a PowerPoint, and make an example.

EXAMPLES OF ARTWORK
Hand made examples from the class photo and a Chuck Close video for inspiration for project. https://youtu.be/_e-p5M0vhZI

ASSESSMENT

Students will be assessed as they complete the project and assemble it. Alignment will be evidence of understanding and application of concept. I also will ask the what they like about the project and what they would change.

MATERIALS
Photo of class, 8" x 10" or 9" x 12" cut into # retangle or square to provide one for each students
Graphite pencils and erasers
White paper in ratio to large photo
Colored Pencils
Ruler

LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND TIMING
1. Teacher provides math content review. 10 mn
2. Present Powerpoint, video and show example. 10 mn
3. Review instructions and hand out materials. 5 mins
4. Work time - assist students who are having troubles understanding the project. 35 mins
5. Check in on completion.
6. Give homework assignment with length of time they should work ( 30 minutes outside of class)
7. Following class period students will install drawing mural as a team.
8. Once installed, the class reflects on their pieces, success, interest, and what could make thing better.

TEACHER REFLECTION
It may take some students longer then other students to complete the project.
This project fits perfectly into the math curriculum for 8th grade geometry/algebra standards.  At the end of the project I would be able to see what the student has learned depending on the quality of their work.  I receive feedback by asking the students what did they like and dislike about the project and asking Allison how I did and what she thought I could improve on.
